FASHION TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN 110 at THE SEWIST

Fashion Technology & Design 110 is an accredited course by the New Brunswick’s Department of Education. Any student who takes this course will be provided with a certificate of completion, and a final grade to apply to their HS transcript.

What we offer is more than a personal credit, the skills learned are lifelong, and invaluable. Great for anyone who wants to get involved with costumes for school productions or is looking at a career in fashion or costume design (offered at NBCCD and Dalhousie’s Fountain School of Performing Arts respectively). ‍ ‍‍ ‍

Fashion Technology & Design 110 at The Sewist Course Overview

Section 1: Sewing Basics

  • Learn the fundamentals while making 3 projects: tote bag, lounge pants, and a doll/stuffy.

  • Learn practical techniques like sewing buttons, zippers, darts, etc., by creating samplers.

Section 2: Sewing in the World (4 units)

  • Fashion Careers: Research a fashion designer (short essay) and create a design using them as inspiration through a mood board and fashion illustration.

  • Sustainability: Learn about the effects of fast fashion and create an awareness poster.

  • Fashion History & Communication: Research a fashion trend from a specific era, then create and present a power point about what messages that trend communicated about the wearer.

  • Garment Care & Labels: learn about laws surrounding clothing labels, how to properly wash and take care of clothing, and how to determine fabric content through burn tests

Section 3: Garment Construction Project

  • Students are required to construct a garment from a commercial pattern focusing on the sewing skills they learned throughout the course. This is essentially your final exam.

Course Dates: July 20-24 & 27-30, 2026 (10 days), 9am-5pm with an hour for lunch.

Course Fees: $660 (hst exempt): This includes a materials fee and a $45 gift card to our store to use towards fabric and notions for the projects.
